Design: 3,000-15,400 lb load/5″-12″ stroke
Material: Carbon Steel
Size: 31″ up to 148″ pin-to-pin and cylinder diameters from 2.5″ to 5″

Piping Technology & Products designed these hydraulic snubbers for an ammonia plant in Louisiana. The snubbers ranged in length from 31" up to 148" pin-to-pin and cylinder diameters from 2.5" to 5". They are designed for an operating load ranging from 3,000 lb. to 15,400 lb. and have a 5" to 12" stroke. Hydraulic snubbers are designed to protect the piping system when a sudden, heavy load is applied (such as an earthquake of high intensity), which can cause serious vibrations leading to damage and possible failure of the piping system.

Most hydraulic snubbers have a piston which is relatively unconstrained in motion at low displacement rates. At high displacement rates the piston "locks up", that is, the force required to move the piston increases substantially, usually as a result of the closing of a valve.

Hydraulic snubbers are used in many applications and are typically needed urgently in operational facilities. We have provided these products in all major verticals including refining, petrochemical, renewables, and power operations.. Our hydraulic snubbers are built in accordance with ASME Boiler and pressure vessel code and our Laconia, New Hampshire operations have ASME Nuclear Stamp "NS" for nuclear applications.

Type: Embed Plates
Size: ¾” x 14” x 18” | Nelson Studs: ¾” x 7”
Material: HDG Carbon Steel
Testing: Visual & Q.C. Tests

PT&P designed and manufactured 157 embed plates for a construction company in Texas. Embeds are essentially anchor bars used to secure steel to the concrete. The plate is ¾” x 14″ x 18″, and the Nelson studs are ¾” x 7″. All components are fabricated from carbon steel with a hot-dipped galvanized finish. Visual and Q.C. tests were performed prior to shipment. This job was a 15-day turnaround in order to meet the customers’ construction schedule.

Embeds are usually set in concrete foundations, floors, or piers and are a key component in the construction industry for connecting steel to concrete. Virtually all “grass-roots” projects such as chemical, power, refinery, solar, food processing, mining, and green energy plants contain embedded steel as a part of its foundation. These can also be used in automotive, semiconductor, and now battery plants. We have the ability and knowhow to custom manufacture various sizes, types and can utilize different materials to meet our client specifications.

Our Houston based manufacturing operations allow us to meet tight delivery schedules at most project job sites allowing for cash flow management of the project and substantially reduced supply chain risk. Typically embeds and anchor bolts have time criticality considerations because the concrete construction teams must mobilize in a timely fashion so logistics and cost can be managed effectively.

Constant Spring Supports Custom-Designed for a Large Crude Oil Processing Facility

Constant Spring Supports Custom-Designed For One Of The Largest Crude Oil Processing Facilities In The World

Piping Technology & Products custom-designed constant spring supports for crude oil processing at one of the largest refineries in the world. Petroleum refineries change crude oil into products such as jet fuel, gasoline, polypropylene, polyethylene, propane, sulfur, carbon black feed, and diesel that can be used for transportation, heating, feedstocks for making other chemicals, generating electricity, renewable energy, and paving roads. Piping Technology and Products was awarded this project because we were the only engineering manufacturing firm vendor of constant spring manufacturers in the world that could both design, manufacture, and test these units for the unique design conditions. These constant springs will support loads ranging from 88,185 lb. to 143,300 lb. They are designed for temperatures up to 650°F, and movements of 0.39" up, 4.72" down, -2.36" up, and 0.39" down. The Type-C constants are 67" H x 21" W x 88.25" L and the Type-F constants are 85" H X 39.75" W x 86.56" L.

The F-Type springs will include graphite slide plates and are designed to support the piping from below while allowing both lateral and axial movement. All constant assemblies underwent magnetic particle inspection of welds, travel, and compression tests. Additionally, a special “cramp test” was conducted on each spring coil. A "cramp test" is done by compressing the spring coil by a specified length for a specific period of time. This assures the spring’s functionally especially when a large "wire diameter" is used to manufacture the spring coil for these high loads. At Piping Technology and Products and our subsidiaries, we specialize in designing pipe supports, expansion joints, and insulated supports for unique applications involving products not readily available. Our products are used in the CDU (crude distillation units), hydrocracking units, RFCC (residual fluid catalytic cracking), naphtha hydrotreater, and hydrodesulfurization units (also known as alkylation unit), and sulphuric acid regeneration (SAR) units in refineries.

Saddle Support Spring Isolators for an Old Steam Chest Saddle

Saddle Support Spring Isolators Designed For An Old Steam Chest Saddle

PT&P custom-designed and fabricated "saddle support spring isolators" to replace the previous springs originally designed in 1974 for supporting an old steam chest saddle at a chlor-alkali chemical plant. Chlor-alkali plants use salt and electricity to produce caustic soda and chlorine gas. Downstream, the chlorine gas – either wet or optionally dry – can be reacted in a chemical process to produce bleach, other chlorine derivatives, or chemical feed stocks finding its way into the production of glass, plastics, pulp, paper, textiles, vinyl, antiseptics, insecticides, and a water treatment agent and in some soaps and detergents. Rising demand for chlorine and caustic soda in various industries such as automotive, pharmaceuticals, paper, and chemicals are driving the chlor-alkali market. Due to improvements in the manufacture of spring coils, PT&P’s engineering team suggested improvements to the original design using a more well-suited design that exceeds the original design specifications. These saddle supports include PTFE, 25% glass-filled slide plates bonded to the top of the assembly. They are designed to support up to 32,000 lb. each with a 6,250 lb/in. spring rate. These springs do not have the traditional spring housing typically used to encase the spring coil, instead, they are fabricated utilizing carbon steel plates in conjunction with chains and internal components. See diagram below. Ptp Spring Isolators Plain Diagram 161917

The spring coils are alloy steel and were custom designed per this customer’s specified wire dia, active/total coils, and solid height. The spring supports were load tested and a quality control inspection was completed that included MAG Particle Inspection. PT&P can replace existing custom variable spring supports using the original design drawings from plants built more than 50 years ago. PT&P can also reverse engineer any spring hanger by taking detailed measurements of the support in the field and sending the information back to our shop for a quick lead time during a plant turnaround or shutdown. Many of the custom spring supports that PT&P has supplied to replace original equipment have been in service for more than 40 years.

Compact Spring Supports Custom-Designed for Large Diameter Piping at a Chemical Plant

Compact Spring Supports Custom-Designed For Large Diameter Piping At A Chemical Plant

These compact spring supports were custom-designed to support large-diameter piping at a chemical plant that manufactures ethylene, propylene, butadiene, benzene, propylene oxide, styrene monomer, and other derivatives and gasoline-blending products. They are designed for large loads (13,623 lb. to 24,038 lb.) and a small confined space with limited thermal movement (from 0.2″ to 0.3″). Compact spring supports (or disc springs) minimize excessive loads on sensitive equipment, so these types of spring support the same load as a conventional variable spring but with a smaller “working range” and utilize 25-50% less space. They are ideal for locating under equipment flanges or other locations where space is limited. The housing is fabricated from A-36 carbon steel and hot-dipped galvanized to protect against corrosion. They have an installed height of 13″ – 15″ and are 21″ in diameter. The “disc springs” are engineered using stainless steel. Each assembly underwent load testing and other NDE before shipment.

Mechanical Snubbers for a Refinery in Oklahoma

Mechanical Snubbers For A Refinery In Oklahoma

Type: Mechanical Snubbers
Size: Size MSA-10, 36″ OAL, and 30 1/2″ Pin-To-Pin
Material: Carbon Steel with HDG Finish
Design: Operating load of 15,000 lbs and a 6″ Maximum Stroke
Testing: Standard Load Tests

Piping Technology & Products supplied these mechanical snubbers with two end brackets fabricated from carbon steel with an HDG finish for a refinery in Oklahoma. They are size MSA-10, 36" OAL, and 30 1/2" pin-to-pin. The snubbers are designed for an operating load of 15,000 lbs and have a 6" maximum stroke. Standard load tests were performed before shipment. Mechanical snubbers have two modes of operation. In passive mode, i.e., motion caused by thermal loads, the resisting mechanism is disengaged, and the snubber "free wheels" with very low resistance. The mechanism is engaged in active mode, and the snubber limits the acceleration of motion to a low threshold value.

In addition to refineries, mechanical snubbers are preferred for use in nuclear plants as they do not contain hydraulic fluids that could degrade over time. Mechanical snubbers are also used in chemical, power, and green energy plants such as solar and geothermal. Mechanical snubbers are also used in earthquake zones to limit shock or sway caused by seismic disturbances.

Cryogenic Pipe Saddles with Micarta® Insulation for LNG Service

Insulated Pipe Supports for Low Temperatures

PT&P manufactured cryogenic pipe saddles for LNG transportation pipelines. These types of insulated supports have been utilized in LNG plants around the world. Insulated supports are also used on cold piping in semiconductor plants or plants that make batteries to eliminate condensation.

Cryogenic Pipe Saddles With Micarta® G-10 Insulation For Lng Service

A cold shoe is a pipe support used for cryogenic applications where the transfer of cold temps from the pipeline to the surrounding steel pipe rack is not desirable. These supports can be used for temperatures down to -320° Fahrenheit.  This particular type of insulated pipe saddle assembly was fabricated with a carbon steel base plate, 304L stainless steel saddle, and an insulation block. The overall size ranges from 25” x 19” x 12-¾” to 29” x 25” x 13-3/8”. These pipe shoes were manufactured to support pipe sizes ranging in diameter from 36″ to 42″ NPS.

For additional information about Insulated Pipe Supports go to our product page.

Cryogenic Pipe Saddles Made for LNG Project

For this job, our client was a new entrant into the LNG engineering and design market space, and this was one of their capstone projects internally and for the marketplace.  Given PTP’s long history and experience concerning LNG pipe supports, we served as strategic partners in the engagement.  We identified that the client was using a pre-existing standard that underestimated the amount of Micarta® insulation thickness needed to provide adequate insulation for the facility.

PT&P engineers recognized that the insulation was not sufficient, and we tested the existing design using a test fixture we developed to demonstrate our concern.  PT&P utilized thermal scanning (infrared technology) to measure temperature at various locations around the insulated pipe support. As a result of our tests, our client corrected the concern, saving dollars, man hours, and scheduled project completion.

Variables use coiled springs to support a load and allow movement. The resistance of the coil to a load changes during compression, which is why these devices are called “variables”. We offer a variety of different designs of variable spring pipe supports. View Variable Spring Supports Product Section.
For this application, the variable spring with rollers were used in natural gas compressor stations in Texas. Compressor stations are an essential part of a natural gas pipeline that moves natural gas from one location to another. At these stations, natural gas is re-pressurized and sent back into the pipeline system where it travels until the next compressor station. The location and distance between compressor stations is dependent on terrain, and the number of gas wells in the vicinity. Frequent elevation changes and a greater number of gas wells will require more compressor stations.
The compressor station, also called a pumping station, is the “engine” that powers a long-distance natural gas pipeline. As the name implies, the station compresses the gas (increasing its pressure) thereby providing energy to move it through the pipeline. The compressor is driven by a motor fueled by some of the natural gas bled from the pipeline. The size of the station and the number of compressors (pumps) varies, based on the diameter of the pipe and the volume of gas to be moved.
Piping Technology and Products and its subsidiaries provide products and services to this critical piece of the energy infrastructure with not only variable spring supports with rollers showcased here, but also with insulated supports, expansion joints, pipe shoes, guides, and anchors.
