U-Type Constant Spring Supports Designed for a Power Plant

Type: Constant Spring Supports
Material: Carbon Steel | HDG | PTFE, 25% Glass Filled
Design: 8,200 lb. Load | 11-1/2″ Total Travel
Testing: Standard Load and Travel Test

PT&P designed and manufactured 48 constant spring supports for a power plant in Mexico. The constants pictured above are Fig. 200 U-type constant spring supports fabricated from A-36 carbon steel and include PTFE, 25% glass-filled slide plates bonded to the load flange. The supports are 39″ H x 26″ W x 80″ L and are designed for operating loads up to 8,200 lb., with a total travel of 11-1/2″. These are horizontal constants designed to support piping from below in conjunction with a pipe saddle. All the constants went through standard load and travel testing per MSS Standards prior to shipment.

Constant spring supports find applications in various fields and can be made from diverse materials tailored to specific end applications. These supports are integral in industries such as petrochemicals, LNG, refining, power generation, steel mills, and geothermal plants, among others. In the past, obtaining a custom-designed constant spring support posed a significant challenge in terms of both design and manufacturing, with lead times extending to a minimum of 6-8 weeks.

Through a dedicated focus on manufacturing optimization and employing a design-centric engineering approach, we have successfully reduced the required time by more than half. Now, the process of acquiring custom constant spring supports is significantly streamlined. In fact, we are capable of fulfilling emergency orders in less than 24 hours, taking into account the client’s location and urgent requirements.

U-Type Constants Designed with Slide Plates for a Polypropylene Plant in Texas

July 4, 2023

147164a1

PT&P designed and fabricated a U-Type constant spring support , with PTFE and a 25% glass-filled side plate for a Polypropylene Plant in Texas. The constant is fabricated from carbon steel and hot-dipped galvanized for extra protection against corrosion. The vertical movement is 1.5" total upward travel and is capable of supporting a load of 10,350 lbs. throughout its range of movement. The constant underwent standard load testing prior to shipment.

Along with chemical plants, constant spring supports are utilized in refineries, power plants, and heat recovery steam generators (HRSG). The design of the constant spring support replaced a system of pipe support called a "counterweight" design still used in some facilities today. The counter-weight system utilized pipe clamps or lugs (attached or welded to the pipe), cables, pulleys, and a set of weights. Just like the old-fashioned brass weighing scales, weights were added to one end of the pulley system until an equilibrium was reached. The counterweight design needed a large amount of space with which to operate. Constant spring hangers replaced this system because they require much less space in order to function (similar to some designs we stand on to weigh ourselves). No matter the application, our team of experienced engineers and designers can help to resolve your pipe support needs. Standard travel and load tests were performed prior to shipping.

Constants can be used with rollers, travelers, or slide plates to accommodate lateral or axial movement in the pipeline system in plants such as solar, geothermal, soybean crushing, ethanol, and other green energy facilities. Our company and its subsidiaries work with over 90% of the leading green energy providers in the world.

Our Field Service team, along with our pipe support engineers and designers, can also conduct inspections of existing supports, provide consultation on-site remediation, and oversee installation on both a short-term and long-term basis catering to facilities worldwide. So whether a “grassroots project” or an existing plant that has been in service for years, we offer cost-effective products and services.

Material: A36 Carbon Steel | Hot-dipped Galvanized| Epoxy Coating
Design: Load Range: 2,280 lb. to 7,143 lb. | 2″ Total Travel
Testing: Q.C. Inspection | Load and Travel Tests

PT&P custom-designed Constant Spring Support with travel stop adjustment rods for a manufacturing company. We “re-created” the design of constants sold years ago by our now sister company, Fronek Anchor/Darling. The constants needed to fit the “envelope” or space of the original constants sold to this client for an application in an existing plant. The constants were fabricated from A36 carbon steel, hot-dipped galvanized, and painted with an epoxy coating. The assemblies are designed for an operating load ranging from 2,280 lb. to 7,143 lb. with 2″ of total travel. Standard load and travel test and Q.C. inspections were completed prior to shipment to North Carolina.

We have a great deal of experience manufacturing constant spring supports similar to that of existing constants if needed to fit existing space limitations. We can also refurbish constants manufactured by competitors if the units are repairable. So whether the constants are for large duct systems in power and refining plants or focused around renewable, carbon-neutral plants, we can assist our clients to find a cost-effective solution.

Custom Designed Constant Spring Supports for a Chemical Plant in Singapore

Type: Constant Spring Supports
Size: 15-¼” W x 17″ H x 46″ L with 9-¼” OD
Material: Carbon Steel | Hot-dipped Galvanized
Design: 2,379 lb. Load | 10″ Upward Movement

PT&P custom designed and manufactured constant spring supports for a chemical plant in Singapore. The constants are fabricated from A36 carbon steel and include alloy coil springs. The dimensions are 15-¼” W x 17″ H x 46″ L with 9-¼” OD. They were designed for an operating load of 2,379 lb. and movement of 10” upward and were specially designed to incorporate “telescoping spring coil housings ” and painted to protect against corrosion. Standard load and travel tests were performed prior to shipment. As part of the standard quality control process, we test every constant that we build before it is shipped. We are ISO-9001:2015 Certified by DNV GL. Last year we built over 1500 constants alone for our customers. Some were designed to support loads up to 150,000lbs with movements over 48 inches.

These specific constants were for a plant that manufactures industrial gasses such as hydrogen, carbon monoxide, and synthesis gasses. Constant spring assemblies are used in a variety of applications ranging from CDU (crude distillation units), hydrocracking units, RFCC (residual fluid catalytic cracking), naphtha hydrotreater and hydrodesulfurization units (also known as alkylation units), and sulphuric acid regeneration (SAR) units in refineries, LNG, Geothermal, Coker units, HRSG units, and other facilities where there is substantial thermal growth in the piping. They can be configured to accommodate horizontal or vertical movement.

Constants use a spring coil (or set of coils) to accommodate pipe movement from the initial (installed) condition to the final (operating) condition of the piping system. For all constant spring supports there is no difference in the load to be supported. Instead, these spring supports are designed to accommodate movement due to thermal expansion or contraction. PT&P has set up its manufacturing department to offer an unparalleled set of customization options with minimal impact on delivery timeframes. In addition to our standard (hot-dipped galvanized, neoprene coated spring coils) variable spring supports, we can customize any material, finish, dimension, load, load adjustment, travel, travel stops, and provide sensors for remote monitoring.

View the recording at: Webinars

This webinar series was created to explain the basic principles of different types of pipe supports in the simplest way possible. It is geared towards “non-engineers” who want to have a better understanding of pipe supports. This particular presentation will give you a brief introduction to pipe supports and will then solely concentrate on constant and variable spring supports. It will explain the various designs, applications, and details of each support using simple terms and a lot of visual aids. The presentation will conclude with general guidelines of the maintenance and ordering process of constants and variables.
