Insulated Pipe Supports Designed For Cryogenic And High Temperature Pipe Systems For An Ammonia Project

PT&P custom designed 98 insulated pipe supports for an ammonia project at a chemical plant in Louisiana. The supports were designed for both cryogenic and high-temperature pipe systems, with an 8" to 22" baseplate width and a 10" to 28" saddle length. They were designed for pipe diameters of 6"-24" and are composed of polyurethane foam for cryogenic and high-density calcium silicate insulation for high temperatures. Standard Q.C. and dimensional tests were performed prior to shipment.

This project was a combination of upgrading a current anhydrous ammonia plant and adding new capacity to the facility. We worked with the EPC, on-site contractors, and operators to ensure specifications and delivery deadlines were met over a three-year period during project construction. In addition to the insulated supports discussed here, we designed, manufactured, and shipped bellmouth reducers, metallic expansion joints, pipe shoe guides and anchors, pipe hanger hardware, slide plates, snubbers, sway braces, struts, and variable spring supports.

Pipeshields Insulated Supports 138055

Pipe Shields, Inc., a division of PT&P designed pre-insulated pipe supports for a high-temperature pipeline at a petrochemical plant overseas. This style of insulated support is designed to be compact, easy to install and eliminate the need for field welding. The insulation is 5-1/2″ thick utilizing 18 lb. and 28 lb. pcf high-density calcium silicate. The “hot shoes” are fabricated from carbon steel and hot-dipped galvanized for corrosion protection. They are rated for temperatures from +40°F to +1800°F. Q.C. inspections and dimensional tests were performed before an expedited shipment.

Such insulated supports are used for chilled water, hot water, and steam line applications in industries ranging from pharmaceutical, semiconductor, paper mills, chemical plants, data centers, biofuels, and food processing to name a few. Piping Technology and Products, through its subsidiary, industry leader, and pioneer, Pipe Shields, has supplied to all these markets in the USA and internationally for over 45 years. Most recently, we made a large investment to automate manufacturing in our Houston plant to increase throughput and yield to support our customers’ needs for just-in-time deliveries reducing cash requirements on projects.

Cryogenic Pipe Supports Designed For A Facility In Massachusetts

Type: Cryogenic Pipe Supports
Material: Carbon Steel | Polyurethane
Design: -320°F | 36″ – 48″ Dia. | 52″ W x 57″ H x 67″ L

PT&P received an order to custom design 16 cryogenic pipe supports for a contractor in Massachusetts. They needed a pipe forming a T-section lined with insulation and trimmed to accommodate the pipe perpendicular to the shoe length. The overall dimensions of the order are pipe sizes ranging from 36″ to 48″ in diameter, 52″ width and 57″ to 67″ height. Our insulation is designed to support the pipe and its contents. When insulated pipes are supported, the weight of the pipe, the contents, the operating temperature, and the amount of energy loss must be considered. In order to support the pipe and minimize energy loss from heat transfer, a pre-insulated pipe support is necessary. If the material in the pipe is high temperature such as high pressure steam or heating oil, then high temperature insulation is required, and these supports are called hot shoes. If the material is cold, such as liquefied natural gas, cooling water or ammonia, then low temperature insulation is needed, and these types of supports are called cold shoes.
