Sway Braces Custom Designed for a Mechanical Equipment Supplier

Type: Fig. 555 Sway Braces
Size: 34-7/8” to 42-1/4″
Material: A36 carbon steel | Hot-dipped Galvanized
Design: 17,827 lb. Ld. | 12″ Travel | 7,200 lb. Spring Rate

PT&P custom designed Fig. 555 sway braces for a mechanical equipment supplier in Canada. The sway braces are fabricated from carbon steel, hot-dipped galvanized and range in length from 34-7/8” to 42-1/4″. The largest sway brace was designed for an operating load of 17,827 lb., a design travel of 12″ in either compression or extension and a spring rate of 7,200 lb. per inch. The smallest sway brace was designed for an operating load of 200 lb., a design travel of 9″ in either compression or extension and a spring rate of 1,800 lb. per inch.

The specified loads and/or movements exceed those of PT&P’s standard sway brace; therefore, these sway braces required a custom design and fabrication. Each sway brace was configured with a unique combination of carbon steel, spring coils, housings and internal components to accommodate the non-standard loads and movements.

What is the difference between a snubber, sway brace and sway strut?

January 25, 2013

A snubber is a shockabsorber, it stops all movement caused by a sudden transient (emergency) loadin a pipe system.A sway brace is ashock arrestor, it dampens the load and reduces the overall movement.A sway strut stopsall movement and transfers it into the pipe structure.

What is a sway brace?

February 1, 2011

A sway brace is a device that is recommended for controlling vibration, absorbing shock loadings, guiding or restraining the movement of pipe resulting from thermal expansion, and bracing a pipe line against sway. They contain springs that provide a restraint force in both a tension and compression mode.

What do sway braces do?

November 3, 2010

Sway braces utilize a spring coil to provide a restraint force in both a tension andcompression mode. The magnitude of the restraint force is dependent upon thespring rate and the amount of deflection which will be seen during operation.

What are sway suppressors?

Either sway braces or sway struts can be used to suppress swinging of the pipeline. Note that sway braces permit pipe deflection while sway struts are rigid supports meant to prevent all movement.
