Sway Braces Custom Designed for Coker Units at an Oil Refinery in the Virgin Islands

Type: Custom Sway Braces with Ball Joints
Material: A36 Carbon Steel | Hot-dipped Galvanized
Testing: Standard Load Testing & Q.C. Inspection

PT&P custom-designed sway braces on an urgent basis to replace existing sway braces at one of the ten largest oil refineries in the world initially built over 75 years ago. These sway braces will be used in Coker units that have long displacements. They are fabricated with “ball joints” at both ends due to the “banana effect,” where the Coker unit will actually bend due to the heating of one side of the Coker unit faster than the opposite side. The casing, pipe, coils, threaded rods, turnbuckle, ball joints, etc., are all fabricated from carbon steel with a hot-dipped galvanized finish.

The maximum loads, spring rates and movements for the sway braces are as follows:

Max Load (lb) Spring Rate (lb/in) Max Movement (+ / – in)
2475 90 10″
3800 267 3-3/4″
3480 120 9″
2500 200 2″

Sway Struts Designed for an LNG Liquefaction and Export Facility

Piping Technology & Products is a manufacturer of all types of pipe supports to areas all over the world ranging from sports stadiums to geothermal to infrastructure applications. In fact, many of the items you will see on our website were developed for the specific requirements of a customer who could not use the standard designs available in our industry. These sway strut assemblies were designed and fabricated for a large LNG liquefaction and export plant. Sway struts are used in a wide range of applications in power plants, chemical and refineries to restrain movement in tension (or X plane) while allowing lateral movement (in the Y and Z plane). These fig. 2100F, size C sway struts are designed with 4” adjustment for loads up to 4,500 lb. The pins are fabricated from a high alloy steel for added strength and the threaded rod ends are carbon steel and hot-dipped galvanized. The sway strut body was hot-dipped galvanized after the donut and pipe were welded. The rod ends and end brackets were galvanized a second time for added corrosion resistance after the holes for the IKO bearings and pins are enlarged to fit these component parts. The C-C dimension is 30-11/16” and a quality control inspection involving thread engagement was completed prior to shipment. Sway Braces Designed to Absorb Pipeline Vibrations Leading into a Containment Shelter

Sway Braces Designed to Absorb Pipeline Vibrations Leading into a Containment Shelter

PT&P manufactured Fig. 550B Sway Braces for preventing excessive loading on 12″ diameter flanged expansion joints leading into a containment shelter. The sway braces include our Fig. 30 Forged Turnbuckles, spring casing. and size 3 spring coils along with other internal components. They are fabricated from carbon steel, hot-dipped galvanized, and designed for a spring rate of 450 lb./in. These sway braces measure 91-3/8″ pin-to-pin and are suitable for full deflection forces from 200 to 1,800 lb. Initial pre-compressed spring forces are from 50 lb. to 450 lb. to dampen vibrations, oppose pipe sway and absorb shock forces.

Fig.550b sway braces

Sway braces are recommended for controlling vibration, absorbing shock loadings; guiding or restraining the movement of the pipe resulting from thermal expansion; bracing a pipeline against sway. The vibration control and sway brace is shipped and ready for installation. The rod coupling rotates with slight resistance and the tension test collar can be rotated by hand while holding the rod stationary.

The sway brace should be in the neutral position when the system is hot and operating, at which time the tension test collar should be hand tight. If it is not, the sway brace should be adjusted to the neutral position by use of the load coupling. The screws in the tension test collar need not be loosened, since they serve only to secure it to the load coupling.

Custom Sway Brace and Variable Spring Assemblies Designed for an Aerospace Development Facility

These custom designed sway braces and variable spring assemblies were designed for hanger duct work in an aerospace development facility. The assemblies measure 67-1/2″ long with a 14-1/8″ O.D. The variables are a modified F-type spring with a pivoting base and non-standard coil combination, including a nested spring design. The assemblies include fully adjustable travel stops and custom end brackets. They are fabricated from carbon steel and designed for load ranges between 1100 lb. and 9250 lb. with a spring rate of +/- 2.78″.

Custom Sway Braces with Ball Joints for a Refinery

28 sway braces were custom designed from a combination of carbon steel and A-5160 spring steel. Custom design and fabrication was required due to the design loads and movements exceeding the largest standard sway brace assembly. The application required ball joint ends because the angle of incline exceeded the maximum five degree angle. The largest of the sway braces was designed for an operating load of 10,000 lb. with a travel range of 5″ in either compression or extension. Each sway brace was load and travel tested prior to shipping to ensure functionality throughout the entire travel range.

The sway braces will be used in pairs to support a 72″ diameter cooling tower supply line via a common attachment point. The internal components and housing are fabricated from carbon steel, and A-5160 spring steel was used for the coil. Each sway brace has a spring rate of 10,100 lb/in. with an overall available travel of 3″. The adjustable ends are configured so that one end bracket is interlocked with the mating end bracket of its sister sway brace; therefore, enabling them to be connected to the pipe by a single lug.

48 Sway Braces for a Refinery Expansion Project

The carbon steel sway braces for this project range in length from 88-3/8″ to 95-3/4″. The largest sway brace has an operating load of 18,000 lb., a design travel of 12″ in either compression or extension, and a spring rate of 1416 lb. per inch. The smallest sway brace has an operating load of 7000 lb., a design travel of 8″ in either compression or extension, and a spring rate of 1000 lb. per inch.

The anticipated loads and movements exceed those of the largest standard PT&P sway brace; therefore, these sway braces required a custom design and fabrication. Each of the 48 sway braces are configured with a unique combination of spring coils, housings, and internal components to accommodate the non-standard loads and movements.

These PT&P sway braces are fabricated from carbon steel and measure 126″ from pin to pin. They use an integral piston assembly with guide to eliminate any buckling and/or misalignment during extension and compression. The sway braces are designed for 10 1/2″ of travel and a load of 1,500 lb. A combination of standard spring coils is used to achieve the required spring rate of 150 lb./in.

Prior to shipment, a test was performed using a hydraulic ram. This test simulated actual field conditions and allowed the sway brace to move through the entire travel range in both compression and extension modes.

These special sway braces that are subject to the banana effect were designed to specific requirements for a Coker Plant in Texas. With deflection capability of up to plus or minus 9″ in all directions, these sway braces are used to stabilize tall stacks. Five springs in tandem prevent binding during operation, and are necessary due to extreme length. The sway braces ranged from 70″ to 144″ in length and can handle up to 8,000 lbs. The precision machined pivoting ball joints positioned at each end allow for freedom of movement in any unpredictable direction.

Sway Braces for Petroleum Company in Louisiana

Piping Technology & Products, Inc. specially designed and fabricated ten sway braces, with total travel distance of 14, for a petroleum company in Louisiana.

The standard PT&P braces have springs that allow 3 of total travel distance. These sway braces were custom designed to provide total travel distance of 5 and 14. The center-to-center dimensions ranged from 92¼” to 115″ with internal supports to prevent buckling. The desired spring rates for the sway braces were 450 lb./in. and 1350 lb./in. The custom sway brace assemblies comprised of pipes (for spring housing), springs (sizes dependent on spring rate and total travel) and in some cases, ball joints.
