Variable Spring Supports Designed for a Large Refinery Project in Texas

PT&P manufactured 266 variable spring supports for a refinery in Texas. The variable spring hangers include chained travel stops for ease of disengagement and reinsertion during plant shutdowns. Variable springs (a type of Compression spring) are used in a wide range of applications (including various Low Carbon Capital projects, CO2 removal units, and Infrastructure improvements) to support the piping system. The variables are fabricated from carbon steel and hot-dipped galvanized to protect against corrosion. The PTP-2 variables were designed for loads up to 13,850 lb. and movements up to 0.1875” upwards. The PTP-4 variables were designed for a maximum load of 15,050 lb. and movements up to 0.8125” upwards. Each spring hanger underwent standard load testing and QC tests. PT&P also provided constant supports for loads that remain uniform throughout the deflection cycle and sway struts for controlling vibration and shock loading while restraining movement due to thermal expansion for this order.

Variable Spring Hangers Designed for a Biofuels Plant

PT&P designed and fabricated B-Type variable spring support assemblies for a biofuels plant. The variables will support pipelines that are involved in the process of converting feedstock into low-carbon synthetic crude oil. Primary biofuels are bioethanol and biodiesel. PT&P specializes in manufacturing pipe supports for high temperatures (above 750°F) applications. These variable springs will support loads up to 953 lb., insulated piping up to 1625°F, and with 1.5” upwards movement. A custom-designed 4-bolt riser clamp fabricated from A36 carbon steel for a 3” diameter pipe was also supplied for this order and used at another location in the plant. The rest of the variable spring assemblies utilized custom-designed 2-bolt pipe clamps manufactured from A240 316L stainless steel plate with A 193 GR. B8M CL.1 bolting for high temperatures. Since these variable springs were located outside the firebox and not exposed to high temperatures, they were fabricated from A36 carbon steel and hot-dipped galvanized for corrosion protection. Load and travel tests, along with Q.C. inspections were performed before shipment.

Load and travel tests, along with Q.C. inspections were performed before shipment. Biofuels are expected to double their market share by 2027. Biofuels are a subset of the new emerging demand and regulatory shift to renewables being seen in the energy sector. In addition to biofuels, other renewables include energy from solar, wind, hydroelectric, ocean, geothermal, and hydrogen sources. There has been a change in strategy for many refineries accelerated by the downturn due to COVID, to convert traditional fossil fuel refineries to renewables. With expertise and over 45 years of experience, PT&P is well-positioned to serve its customers and emerging players in the renewable energy sector. Piping Technology & Product’s specialty is the design and fabrication of products like furnace springs, constants, customized clamps, and hardware in supporting high-temperature headers and radiant coils within fired heaters.

Variable Spring Hangers for an Upstream and Valve Project in Thailand

Variable Spring Hangers Designed for an Upstream and Valve Project in Thailand

PT&P designed and manufactured these variable spring hanger assemblies for an upstream and valve project in Thailand. The variables clamp sizes range from 6″ to 12″ diameter with installed heights ranging from 6-8/8″ to 12-1/4″ from the structure to the center of the pipe. The B-Type pipe hanger assembly uses coil springs to support the load and allow for some movement. They are furnished with one lug welded to the top of the spring casing which allows the assembly to be suspended from structural members for pipe support. All forty-seven variable spring supports were quality checked with a 100% spring coil deflection test and a load cell calibration to set the assemblies at the prescribed installed load.

Piping Technology & Products designed and fabricated 107 variable spring hanger assemblies for an Oil Sands Expansion Project in a central processing facility in Canada. We fabricated these C-type variable springs from hot-dipped galvanized carbon steel. The design loads range from 3,343 lb. to 3,417 lb., and each assembly underwent a series of tests and detailed quality control inspections prior to shipment.

27 B-Type Variable Spring Supports Designed for an Oil Refinery

PT&P designed and manufactured 27 B-Type variable spring supports for an oil refinery in Louisiana. The spring cans, rods, welded beam attachments, turnbuckles and clevises are fabricated from carbon steel. The spring cans have a 12-3/4″ diameter and measure 290″ from the bottom of the steel to the connection of the pipe. They were designed for 2″ of vertical movement and operating loads between 24,375 and 27,500 lb.

Variable Spring Hanger and Pipe Clamp Assemblies Designed for a Cogeneration Plant in Canada

These variable spring hanger and pipe clamp assemblies were custom designed for pipes ranging from 6″ to 20″ diameters at a co-generation plant in Canada. The spring can, threaded rods, weldless eyenuts, welded beam attachments and Fig. 80 pipe clamps were fabricated from hot-dipped galvanized carbon steel. The assemblies are capable of an overall load of 10,790 lb. with a total travel of 1/2″. A total of 21 spring hanger and clamp assemblies underwent standard load and travel testing.

A total of 90 variable spring supports were designed and manufactured to support pipe lines in a gas storage facility in Abu Dhabi. The pictures above show PTP-4 Double Spring B-Type, PTP-6 Triple Springs B-Type, PTP-1 Triple Springs D-Type, and PTP-4 Double Springs F-Type, (also known as F-Cans). Load capacities range from 1,000 lb. to 45,000 lb., and movements range from 3/8″ to 3″. A two-layer custom paint was applied over the hot-dip galvanized finish to protect against a severely corrosive environment. Travel stops were chained to the spring can housing, so they can be reused during plant shutdowns. Load and quality assurance tests were performed on all the supports prior to shipment.

Piping Technology and Products, Inc. designed and manufactured furnace spring assemblies for a chemical refinery in Saudi Arabia.  Each pipe hanger assembly consists of a variable spring, rod, clevis, hex nuts, and pipe attachments. Unlike other variable springs which are designed to have bolted housings, these furnace springs are designed for spring coils with a customer specified spring rate installed in a welded housing. The sizes of these Fig. PTP-2 and Fig. PTP-4 ranged from 90-170, with a total travel of 1 1/4″ to 5″, and loads varying from 850 lbs to 13,300 lbs.
