Why is a clamp support used in cold lines?

Insulated clamp supports may be used in cold applications where the insulation and clamp combination act together to provide a load carrying member and simultaneously provide insulation for the pipe. In some applications, the clamp would be fixed directly to the pipe surface and subsequently insulated with the pipeline.
