Supports that Require Field Welding

Our catalog of supports requiring field welding features heavy-duty components engineered for permanent integration with industrial piping systems. A primary example is the pipe shoe support, which is welded directly to the pipe wall (or a wear pad) to provide a rigid, non-slip base for insulated or bare lines.

Unlike bolted assemblies that may loosen over time, our welded products, including stanchions, saddles, and shoes, ensure maximum structural integrity under high thermal and dynamic loads. Specifying a pipe shoe support from our range of welded products enables precise field adjustments, ensuring the final installation meets the site’s elevation and alignment requirements.

Q: What is the primary advantage of a field-welded pipe shoe support?

A: The primary advantage of a welded pipe shoe support is stability. Because it is permanently fused to the pipe (or reinforcement pad), it eliminates the risk of axial slip along the pipe during operation, a potential issue with clamp-on designs in high-load scenarios.

Q: Are your welded products available in different materials?

A: Yes. Our welded products, such as pipe shoes, are manufactured in carbon steel, stainless steel, and alloy steel. It is important to match the pipe shoe support material to the parent pipe material to help prevent galvanic corrosion and ensure proper weld compatibility and long-term system integrity.

Q: Can a pipe shoe support be used on insulated piping?

A: Absolutely. A pipe shoe support is specifically designed to elevate the pipe above the structural support, allowing insulation to pass through the support location without being compressed or damaged. This helps maintain insulation integrity and thermal efficiency.

Q: Why are wear pads often used with welded products?

A: Wear pads (or repads) are often installed between the pipe and the pipe shoe support. When wear pads are used in conjunction with welded products, they distribute the concentrated load over a larger area of the pipe, reducing local stress on the pipe wall.

Q: Do welded products allow for installation adjustments?

A: Yes. One of the advantages of welded products is that they allow the installer to position the pipe shoe support precisely where needed on the pipe in the field. This flexibility helps accommodate construction tolerances and alignment requirements before the final weld is completed.
