43" Angulating Constants for a Power Plant in Utah
The design of this constant requires that it be connected by pins from the top and from the bottom to allow it to angulate. The constant assemblies are fabricated from A36 carbon steel. The constants measure between 23″ and 43″ in length with a take-off between 29″ and 55″. The load range is 60 lb. to 2,605 lb. and each constant assembly underwent standard load and travel testing.

These U-type upthrust constant supports are designed to handle 6″ of total travel and loads of 5,677 lb. and 4,956 lb. The load flange is modified to hold six ball transfer units for each support. The ball transfer units are used to decrease the coefficient of friction to 0.05 compared to using the standard PTFE, 25% glass filled, which is 0.15.
Ball Transfer Units
Gussets are added under the load flange to maintain a leveled surface and an equal load transfer to all ball transfer units. These custom designed constant supports are manufactured for steam power plant superheaters.

Big Ton Springs used in a Chemical Processing Plant
November 1, 2006
Big Ton Springs used in a Chemical Processing PlantStainless Steel Slideplates on Big Tons
The limiting constraint in designing and fabricating these big ton spring supports was to maintain an overall height less than 15-3/4″ and still allow the load table to travel downward during operation. Whereas a standard PT&P size 2-190 variable springs would have been sufficient to hold the load specified, the coil alone was taller than the space available at site. For this reason, a “big ton” design was implemented which utilized six smaller coils (2-130 size) working in parallel to produce the required load-carrying capability and spring rate.
All of the frame/housing components were made from carbon steel and supplied with an HDG finish. The travel stop rods were made of A-193 Gr. B7 material and were painted red. The slide plates sitting atop the load flange were made of polished A-304 stainless steel.
Both “big ton” assemblies are 30″ wide by 30″ deep by 15-3/4″ tall. Overall spring rate is 3,600 lb/in. and each weighed approximately 1,460 pounds. The installed (cold) load = 14,800 lbs. and the operating (hot) load = 16,075 lbs. Movement from cold to hot = 0.354″ down.
Tested in the load cell to insure proper operation throughout the entire working range of the coils, the “big tons” were then set to the cold (installed) load as specified.

Variable Springs for a Project in Mexico

Variable Springs for a Project in MexicoClose Up of G-can
This Type G variable spring was manufactured for a Petrochemical Plant in Mexico. The Type G assembly is formed by welding two standard spring assemblies to the ends of a pair of channels. This type of assembly can accommodate unusually heavy loads, and is especially convenient for avoiding interference in spaces where headroom is limited.
Each spring assembly is loaded per the client’s specification at Piping Technology and Products manufacturing facilities. A travel stop is inserted and strapped in place to maintain the load for the assembly installation. In addition to banding the travel stops, the variables for this project required chained travel stops. The base style (F-Type) variables on this project were also required to have internal guides.
At Piping Technology and Products, Inc. we use PTP-1, PTP-2, PTP-4, PTP-6 and PTP-8 to designate the five standard coil arrangements to increase the working range of travel of variable supports.
Several types of variable supports were made for this particular project. They included Type A, Type B and Type F.

Horizontal Upthrust Constants for a Power PlantMultiple Constants During Inspection
The horizontal upthrust constants (Fig. PTP200-U) were fabricated from carbon steel and chrome-moly for a Heat Recovery Steam Generator. The constants range in sizes PTP-200 size 3 to 65 and weigh from 24 lbs to 1,300 lbs. They support loads of 100 lbs to 8,100 lbs. The constants support pipes and equipment subjected to vertical movement due to thermal expansion at locations where transfer of stress to other supports or equipment can be critical. Horizontal upthrust constants are utilized in areas where horizontal travel is unacceptable. Standard testing was completed for performance and quality assurance.

Piping Technology & Products, Inc. Performed Field Services for a Power Generating Plant in Texas
PT&P was contracted to assist in the determination of pipe support maintenance at a power plant in Texas. The constant effort support springs with loads of excess of 9,500 lbs and the variable spring supports with loads of 450 lbs were marked for needing attention.
Cleaning Variable Spring UnitInspecting Variable Springs for Performance
PT&P’s objectives were to:
* Evaluate the pipe supports
* Determine state of performance
* Provide a plan of action
* Train personnel on-site to perform adjustments and replacement of supports or support components
* Provide final inspection of modified supports
After Cleaning & Preparation of the ConstantFinal Assembly with Added Slide Plates
The pipe supports needing attention could not be set to the required installation position. A plan was initiated to recondition some of the support components such as turnbuckles and rods. This would allow a greater range of field adjustment to the pipe supports. During a planned shut-down, PT&P Field Service Units returned to the site to modify the existing supports. The initial phase of the modifications included bracing the piping in order to isolate and lock the supports in position. Then, they were disconnected from the system and modifications to the assemblies were completed. Afterwards, the supports were reinstalled and any necessary adjustments were completed. A total of eight pipe supports were modified or adjusted.

Constant Hanger Supports for a Power Recovery Plant
December 7, 2005
Constant Hanger Supports for a Power Recovery Plant
Constant support hangers are used to support pipes subjected to vertical movement. The (Fig. PTP 200) constants are designed to support loads from 4,000 lbs to 57,000 lbs. Each weighs approximately 1,500 lbs to 2500 lbs and has a travel of up to 4″ with an adjustable travel stop. Their sizes range from 15 to 100.
The advantage of an adjustable travel stop is that the constant is able to “lock in” at any position within the range of travel for a given constant. This alleviates the need for a total “shut down” of the piping system for temporary conditions such as hydrotesting, repair, or replacement.
