Big Ton Spring Supports Designed For A 98,250 Lb. Load

Type: Big Ton Spring Supports
Size: 29″ wide x 110″ long x 35″ high
Material: HDG Carbon Steel | A193 Gr. B7 Travel Stops and Load Column
Design: 98,250 lb. | 1-3/4″ Upward
Testing: Load Cell Test

This big ton spring support assembly was designed for a facility in Kansas. For this application PTP’s big ton was used to support heat transfer and steam generating equipment typically used in fossil fuel power generation, combined cycle power generation, petrochemical, and process industries.

Big Ton spring supports are extremely stable. Base supports springs of this design are frequently used under horizontal pressure vessel saddle supports in combination with slide plates or roller supports. Our Big Ton design lends itself ideally to this support situation. Type F design is sufficient where there is a minimal amount of lateral movement, but where the combination of heavy loads and thermal expansion are required, Big Ton industrial springs should be your choice.

The big ton assemblies were fabricated from hot-dipped galvanized carbon steel and include neoprene coated springs coils. The travel stops and load column material is A193 Gr. B7. The units measure 29″ wide x 110″ long x 35″ high and are capable of supporting loads up to 98,250 lb. while accommodating movements from 1-3/4″ upward. The big tons were tested at our facility with a load cell designed by our team to ensure proper operation throughout the big ton’s operating range.

Alongside our ability to design and manufacture big tons specific to your system needs, our field service team is readily available to service, audit, maintain, and/or assist with installation of such products. For more on installation and maintenance take a look at our resource page:

Custom Designed Big Ton Spring Supports For A Propane Dehydrogenation Application In Texas

Type: Big Ton Spring Supports
Size: 42″ x 24″ x 26 1/2″
Material: Carbon Steel
Design: 94,261 lb. Load & 0.085” Movement
Testing: Standard Load Tests

PT&P custom designed big ton spring supports for a propane dehydrogenation application at a chemical plant in Texas. The components within this assembly include the spring housing, coils, name plates, pressure plate, and load indicator. While both assemblies measure 42” L x 24” W x 26-1/2” H, it was modified based on independent specifications for operating loads and movement to accommodate a load of 94,261 lb. and 0.085” of movement. This type of support is ideal for applications, such as supporting pressure vessels that combine very heavy loads with thermal expansion because of the stability they provide. The big ton was tested in the load cell to insure proper operation throughout the entire working range of the coils.

Big Ton Spring Supports Designed For A Liquid Natural Gas Facility In Australia

Type: Big Ton Spring Supports
Size: 19-5/8″ x 19-5/8″ x 15″
Material: Hot-dipped Galvanized Carbon Steel | A193 Gr. B7
Design: Movements: 3/16 ” – 1/4″ | 16,619 lb. Load
Testing: Load Cell throughout Operating Range

These big ton spring supports were designed for a liquid natural gas (LNG) plant in Australia. They were selected because the application required supporting heavy loads as the supported equipment undergoes thermal expansion during operation. The assemblies are fabricated from hot-dipped galvanized carbon steel. The travel stop rods and nuts material is A193 Gr. B7. The units measure 19-5/8″ x 19-5/8″ x 15″ and are capable of supporting loads up to 13,619 lb. while accommodating movements from 3/16″ to 1/4″. The big tons were tested with a load cell to insure proper operation throughout the big ton’s operating range.

Big Ton Spring Supports Designed For An Lng Facility In Australia

These big ton variable spring assemblies were custom designed for an LNG plant in Western Australia. They are specially designed with PTFE, 25% glass filled slide plates, and will be used under horizontal pressure vessel saddle supports. The big tons were selected due to a combination of heavy loads and thermal expansion. The units measure 30″ x 30″ and are capable of supporting a load up to 95,000 lb. with down travel of 2 to 5mm vertical.

Big Tons with W-Beams as Stilts

Stilts using W-Beams were added to these big ton variable assemblies in order to meet height requirements for an oil refinery in Port Arthur, TX. Entirely fabricated with carbon steel, these big tons measure 50 1/2″ – 70″ L x 18″ – 22″ W by 37″ H and are capable of supporting loads up to 113,734 lb with an upward travel range of .076″ – .816″. Permanent travel stops were later installed in order to prevent any chances of downward shift.

The limiting constraint in designing and fabricating these big ton spring supports was to maintain an overall height less than 15-3/4″ and still allow the load table to travel downward during operation. Whereas a standard PT&P size 2-190 variable springs would have been sufficient to hold the load specified, the coil alone was taller than the space available at site. For this reason, a “big ton” design was implemented which utilized six smaller coils (2-130 size) working in parallel to produce the required load-carrying capability and spring rate.

All of the frame/housing components were made from carbon steel and supplied with an HDG finish. The travel stop rods were made of A-193 Gr. B7 material and were painted red. The slide plates sitting atop the load flange were made of polished A-304 stainless steel.

Both “big ton” assemblies are 30″ wide by 30″ deep by 15-3/4″ tall. Overall spring rate is 3,600 lb/in. and each weighed approximately 1,460 pounds. The installed (cold) load = 14,800 lbs. and the operating (hot) load = 16,075 lbs. Movement from cold to hot = 0.354″ down.

Tested in the load cell to insure proper operation throughout the entire working range of the coils, the “big tons” were then set to the cold (installed) load as specified.

Big Ton Springs Equipped with Lifting Lugs

Piping Technology & Products, Inc. specially designed and fabricated big ton springs equipped with side lifting lugs to support piping of a 102-megawatt, refinery cogeneration power plant in California.

Under typical circumstances, this type of job application would utilize variable spring hangers, but because of the restricted space, the hangers’ size would be too small to support a hot load of 19,068 lbs and cold load of 17,212 lbs. In order to satisfy both the required loads and space, PT&P engineers designed and fabricated figure 500 big ton springs equipped with side lifting lugs. The lifting lugs were attached to allow the big ton to suspend as a variable spring would in the field.
