PT&P recently fabricated 22 Fig. 190 Type 3 riser clamps for suspending the vertical runs of pipe at the central power plant in Puerto Rico.  The clamps are designed for 17″ and 24” pipes and have an overall length of 71″ and 87” respectively. Both designs have a bar stock size of 1.75″x10″ and load bolts of 2.75″ diameter. Utilizing gusset plates at the clamp’s bend radius allowed for the smallest, yet sufficient clamp stock size for the specified loads. The smaller clamp has an operating capacity of 14,000 lbs while the larger operates at 20,500 lbs. Chrome-Moy 387 Grade 22 bar stock was used with A193 Grade B7 bolting to accommodate high temperature operating conditions.

3 Custom Built Disc-Spring Arrestors with Clamps

February 28, 2003
3 Custom Built Disc-Spring Arrestors With Clamps
3 Custom Built Disc-Spring Arrestors with Clamps

The disc-spring arrestors provide resistance by utilizing disc springs (sometimes referred to as Belleville® washers) stacked in a series within the assembly housing to produce a specific spring rate.  By utilizing large (over 8 diameter) disc springs, very high spring rates may be obtained.  The arrestors are capable of operating in both tension and compression.

The housing, end bracket, and extension pieces of the spring arrestor are made form A-36 carbon steel. The disc springs are made from ASTM A-1075 spring steel. One clamp (for design temp. of 688 degrees F.) was made from carbon steel and two clamps (for design temp. of 1054 degrees F.) were fabricated from A-387 GR.22 Chrome-Moly steel.

The diameter of each disc spring was 9 with a thickness of 1. The overall pin-to-pin dimension for the assemblies varied with a minimum of 35 and a maximum length of 57. The maximum length that can be accommodated is 120. The clamps were made for 18 and 30 diameter pipes.

The shock arrestor will see a maximum operating load of 43,000 lbs. The spring rate of each arrestor was designed at 40,000 lb./in. The spring arrestors are designed for a maximum displacement of 2. The arrestors were tested to verify spring rate and to confirm the operation of the pipe hanger assembly.

Piping Technology & Products, Inc. designed and fabricated 24″, chrome-moly, three-bolt clamps with horizontal guide stanchions for a 765 MW natural gas-fired combined cycle facility in Mexico.

These clamps, in conjunction with variable springs, will allow for vertical and axial pipe movement while restricting lateral movements. They were made for 24″ OD pipe from 1-1/2 x 9″ stock material. Based upon design considerations, the clamp “E” dimension, from pipe centerline to outer load bolt, was 25″. The clamps were designed for operation at 1065°F and per customer-supplied information, the vertical design load was 1,848 lbs and the maximum lateral load was 19,207 lbs.

The clamp plates are made of A387 GR. 22 plate material, stanchion pieces of A335 GR.22 pipe and the side stop plates of carbon steel.

What are hold-down clamps?

January 11, 2002

Hold-down pipe clamps are used in applications where you would like toeither 1.) anchor the pipe in position or 2.) permit axial movement of the pipe. Slide plates, such as PTFE, 25% glass filled or graphite, can be incorporated into the design to reduce the friction between the pipe and clamp.

40″ Diameter, Alloy Yoke Clamp

PT&P specially designed and manufactured a heavy duty, 40-inch diameter, alloy yoke clamp (cut from a 6″ thick plate) for a Power Plant in Mississippi. The clamp was designed for a 70,000 lb load and is to support a 40″ diameter, high pressure main steam line. The u-bolt was made of a 3″ diameter bar. In order to prove the design of this clamp, Finite Element Analysis was used to simulate the loads and stresses that it may experience in the field. The model shows the stresses at every point by a color coding system.
