F-Type Vertical Constant Spring Supports for a 9,000 lb. Load

October 26, 2021

Ptp Constant Spring Supports 83774 R2

PT&P manufactured compact spring supports designed for loads up to 9,000 lb. Constants are used in Geothermal, Coker units, HRSG units, and other facilities where there is substantial thermal growth in the piping. Green energy (popular to offset carbon emissions) applications such as solar, wind, and hydro also utilize constants. The figure 100 type-F constant spring supports are designed to support piping from below using a sway strut because horizontal space was not available in the system. This vertical constant spring support was the first of its kind designed and manufactured by PT&P for the largest power providers in the South using a diverse fuel and energy supply of coal, nuclear, oil, gas, hydro, and some renewable energy. The base plate is bolted directly to the top of the steel or floor and the sway strut assembly is attached to the arm (cam) of the constant. With the constant bolted in position below the piping and the sway strut assembly attached via a pipe clamp above, when the pipe goes through its upward vertical movement, the constant maintains an equal and opposite force on the piping. If there is also horizontal movement (axial or lateral) in the piping, this type of constant is well suited because of the slight “arch” in the travel path of the internal cam. The constant in the first picture maintains a constant load of 7,000 lb. while the constant in the second picture maintains a load of 9,000 lb. on the pipe throughout its 4” of total travel. They are 36” high with two gussets at the base plate for added strength encountered under hydrotest loading. They are fabricated from A36 carbon steel and hot-dipped galvanized for corrosion protection. Standard load and travel testing were performed on both constants to ensure proper field operation. Piping Technology is a leader in the design, engineering, and manufacturing of pipe supports and our products have been in service for over 40 years.

F-Type Variable Spring Supports

An assortment of standard variable spring supports were manufactured ranging in size from 8-5/8″ to 12-3/4″ dia. with installed heights ranging from 9-7/16″ to 18-1/8″. The F-Type pipe hanger assembly is used to support the pipe from below and are typically mounted to concrete pads via anchor bolts or welded to structural steel. The various springs shown are designed for operating conditions ranging from loads of 1750 lb. with .02″ travel to 21,280 lb. loads with .13″ travel. As with all of our variable supports, these were quality checked with a 100% spring coil deflection test and a load cell calibration to set the assembly at the prescribed installed load.

How do I select a pipe hanger?

November 2, 2010

The design parameters that must be considered when selecting a pipe hanger would include operating temperature, operating load, movement, pipe material, available space, and allowable initial load requirements. Once these are known, then you can select an appropriate type of pipe hanger which could be any of the following types including rigid hangers, variable spring hangers, or constant spring hangers.

What is a trapeze hanger?

A trapeze hanger is a support assembly consisting of parallel vertical rods which are suspended from a structure and connected at their lower ends by a horizontal member from which the pipe is supported. It is used for the suspension of pipe from two rods where longitudinal movement due to expansion or contraction may occur.

Variable Spring and Cro-Moly 3-bolt Clamp Assemblies for a Power Generation Facility

October 5, 2010

Variable Spring And Cro-Moly 3-Bolt Clamp Assemblies For A Power Generation Facility

The variable spring and clamp assemblies are fabricated using a combination of carbon steel for the housing and internal components, spring steel for the spring coils, and Cro-Moly (A-387 GR. 22) for the high temperature 3-bolt clamps. This pipe hanger assembly is an example of PT&P’s standard variable spring design wherein multiple coils are arranged in series to produce adequate load carrying capacity and coil deflection to compensate for the anticipated pipe movement. These particular assemblies are capable of an overall load range of 9,320 lb. to 15,970 lb. with a total travel range of 5″. All pipe hanger assemblies underwent standard load and travel testing, 100% deflection testing, and load cell calibration before shipping to a power generation facility.
