The three pictures above show materials being crated for shipment overseas. At the top center are pallets of variable springs designed for 10” of movement and 1000 pound load. This unusual combination of requirements is satisfied by an unusually long coil. This project required 700 of these variables. At the bottom center are constant supports designed for 14” of movement with loads near 2000 pounds. This large movement, unusual for this load, requires the large arc seen in the frame of the constant body. Two hundred of these constants were required. These spring supports are painted with a shop prime.

3 Custom Built Disc-Spring Arrestors With Clamps
3 Custom Built Disc-Spring Arrestors with Clamps

The disc-spring arrestors provide resistance by utilizing disc springs (sometimes referred to as Belleville® washers) stacked in a series within the assembly housing to produce a specific spring rate.  By utilizing large (over 8 diameter) disc springs, very high spring rates may be obtained.  The arrestors are capable of operating in both tension and compression.

The housing, end bracket, and extension pieces of the spring arrestor are made form A-36 carbon steel. The disc springs are made from ASTM A-1075 spring steel. One clamp (for design temp. of 688 degrees F.) was made from carbon steel and two clamps (for design temp. of 1054 degrees F.) were fabricated from A-387 GR.22 Chrome-Moly steel.

The diameter of each disc spring was 9 with a thickness of 1. The overall pin-to-pin dimension for the assemblies varied with a minimum of 35 and a maximum length of 57. The maximum length that can be accommodated is 120. The clamps were made for 18 and 30 diameter pipes.

The shock arrestor will see a maximum operating load of 43,000 lbs. The spring rate of each arrestor was designed at 40,000 lb./in. The spring arrestors are designed for a maximum displacement of 2. The arrestors were tested to verify spring rate and to confirm the operation of the pipe hanger assembly.

58,000 Lb. Load Variable Spring Assemblies For A Power Plant
Variable Spring Assemblies

The loads, as specified by the customer, were greater than the maximum operating loads for our largest (PT&P size 220) standard variable springs. In order to meet the customer’s requirements, a custom variable spring was designed and fabricated using a larger spring coil normally used only in constant spring assemblies.

The specially fabricated variable spring was 20 in diameter with a standing height of 51 and the hanging components (rod, turnbuckle, clevis) were 3 1/2 diameter pieces.  The spring rate was 3232 lb./in.  All the pipe hanger assembly components were made from carbon steel.

The installed (cold) load was 58,000 lbs. and the operating (hot) load was 61,700 lbs. The calculated movement from cold to hot was 1 1/8 down. The variable spring was tested in the load cell to insure proper operation and also to set the cold load to the specifications provided by the customer.

Piping Technology & Products, Inc. specially designed and fabricated big ton springs equipped with side lifting lugs to support piping of a 102-megawatt, refinery cogeneration power plant in California.

Under typical circumstances, this type of job application would utilize variable spring hangers, but because of the restricted space, the hangers’ size would be too small to support a hot load of 19,068 lbs and cold load of 17,212 lbs. In order to satisfy both the required loads and space, PT&P engineers designed and fabricated figure 500 big ton springs equipped with side lifting lugs. The lifting lugs were attached to allow the big ton to suspend as a variable spring would in the field.

Constants For Constricted Areas of a Chemical Processing Plant

Piping Technology & Products, Inc. custom designed and fabricated 200-C type constants to suit constricted areas of a chemical processing plant in Texas.

Short distances between the pipe and the supporting beam necessitated a custom design. Two designs were needed one was for a 230 lb. load with 11″down travel, while the other was for a 260 lb. load with 13-1/2″ down travel. The PT&P standard design for these constants has Take-Out values of 19-9/16″ and 21-9/16″, respectively. However, the available space permitted no more than 9-1/2″.

Compare the final design, shown on the left to the standard design, shown on the right. Note that the lower part of the frame has been cut away, permitting the pipe to move nearer to the constants’ supporting lugs.

PT&P’s system of stock pipe and spring supports, allowed engineers and workers to fabricate these constants within a short amount of time.

Special Vertical Type E Constant Spring Supports
Special Vertical Type E Constant Spring Supports

Piping Technology & Products, Inc. designed and manufactured special vertical type E constant spring supports for a power plant. These were designed and installed as pairs in a configuration similar to the typical G type constants. The advantage of using a pair of the special E rather than the conventional G type is that the total width is smaller as can be seen in Figure 1.

The constants were designed to support loads from 5,730 lbs to 10,690 lbs. They were fabricated from A36 Carbon steel. The dimensions of the individual constants are 60″ high, 16 1/2″ long, and 14″ in wide. The size of the supported pipe determined the width of the assembly. As with all constants built by PT&P, they were tested to verify that standard specifications for variation of load over the full range of travel were met.

Constant Spring Hangers with Loads up to 105,000 Lbs.

Piping Technology & Products, Inc., custom designed and fabricated a collection of constants for an oil refinery in New Jersey. This application required the use of suspended constants, 100-C and base constants, 200-F.

Constant Spring Hangers With Loads Up To 105,000 Lbs.
Constant Spring Hangers with Loads up to 105,000 Lbs.

In order to support the lines at the oil refinery, PT&P designed the 100-C constant spring hangers (vertical constants suspended from beams) at two different loads and total travels. The 100-C constant with a load of 105,000-lbs. and total travel of 6″ (figure 1) is set to travel 1-3/4″ down and 1-15/16″ up. It is 38-3/8″ in width, 79-1/4″ in height and furnished with a double lug suspension to allow it to hang from a double point suspension beam.

In comparison to the aforementioned constant, this particular 100-C constant spring hanger (figure 2) has a load of 33,000 lbs. and a total travel of 4-1/2″, 3/8″ up and 1-1/2″ down. This specific constant is 24-1/4″ in width, 71″ in height and also furnished with a double lug suspension to suspend from a double point suspension beam. Although the dimensions of these two constants are similar, the size of the springs and cams are very different.

Opposed to the 100-C constant, the 200-F constant spring hanger is a horizontal constant used to support piping from below. These 200-F constant spring hangers were designed with loads of 40,750 lbs. and total travels of 4-1/2″, 3/8″ up and 1-3/4″ down. These constants will be used in conjunction with sway struts to support pipelines at the oil refinery.

Constants in the Field

Piping Technology & Products, Inc. specially designed and fabricated four hundred 100-C, vertical constant load hangers for a plastics plant in Texas. The constants will be used to support a furnace standing three levels high.

In the plant, thirteen single beams confined to limited space will each hang thirty constants, therefore PT&P engineers were required to design the constants to weigh less than 150 pounds. The 136-pound constants with travels of 10 inches upward and a supporting load of 950 pounds, are 33 7/8″ in height and 8 7/8″ in width. They are also supplied with shop prime, painted finish to safeguard against the extremely hot temperatures of the furnace area. In order to insure quality and proper operations of the constants, a prototype was built and tested to MSS standards.

How to Size a Spring Hanger

Piping systems are used to transport gases, liquids and suspended solids between units of a plant. The temperatures of the contents and the pipe when the plant is in operation are often quite different from the ambient temperature of the surroundings. The heat transferred during changes in temperature causes metal pipe to expand and contract. Piping designers must provide for movement due to temperature changes and forces caused by pumps, gravity and other elements of the piping system.Read PT&P’s “How to Size a Spring Hanger” Technical Bulletin for more information.

PT&P Specially Designs and Fabricates Constants for a Radiant-Tube Support System
Constant Springs

These constants are an essential component of the radiant-tube support system for a reforming furnace. Piping Technology custom designed these units to fit in the limited space available inside the furnace. The bolting patterns for the constants needed to be flexible enough that they could be attached to the supporting structure with any of the support system designs being considered.

Slide Plates: The “Sandwich” Concept
Piping Technology & Products, Inc. uses the “sandwich” concept when applying slide plates to our customers ‘ systems. Figure 1 shows a “sandwich” composed of two identical slide plates, one on top and another on the bottom. Each slide plate (which is like the bun of the “sandwich”) and a low coefficient of friction material which is bonded to the metal backing plate.

Slide Plates
Figure 1

Figure 1
In a typical application a slide bearing plate is welded to a structural steel member which is strong enough to provide the required support, but whose coefficient of friction is too high.

Slide Plate
Figure 2

Figure 2 shows an application in which a slide bearing plate is welded on top of one steel beam supporting the other beam. When the top beam moves (due to thermal expansion, for example) it slides across the surface of the bearing plate without contacting the supporting another beam. To return to our “sandwich” metaphor, the top half of the “sandwich” is bonded to the sliding beam, and to the bottom half to the supporting beam.
