Cryogenic Pipe Supports Designed For A Petrochemical Complex In Louisiana

Type: Pre-Insulated Pipe Supports for Cryogenic Application
Size: 46″ – 52″ Diameter Range | 10 lb. & 20 lb. Density PUF Foam
Material: Hot-dipped Galvanized Carbon Steel | PUF | Polyester Film & Aluminum Foil
Testing: Dimensional and Visual Inspection

These cold shoe pre-insulated pipe supports were designed for a cryogenic pipeline at a petrochemical complex in Louisiana. These supports range in size from 46" to 52" in diameter and are engineered for temperatures as low as -20°F. The supports feature a dual-density polyurethane foam (PUF) insulation: the top portion has a density of 10 lb., while the bottom is 20 lb. high-density PUF. The shoe and bearing plates are constructed from carbon steel and finished with hot-dip galvanization for durability and corrosion protection. These cold shoes also include a vapor barrier, consisting of a three-layer lamination of polyester film and aluminum foil, ensuring effective insulation. Standard quality control tests were conducted on all units before shipment to ensure compliance with performance standards.

This type of cold shoe design is also utilized on liquefied natural gas (LNG) storage tanks. Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) storage tanks are specialized containers designed to store LNG, which is natural gas that has been cooled to a liquid state at approximately -260°F (-162°C). This liquefaction process reduces the volume of the gas by about 600 times, making it much more efficient to store and transport. Most LNG tanks are double-walled with an inner and outer shell. The inner shell, typically made of stainless steel or nickel alloy, contains the LNG, while the outer shell, often made of carbon steel or concrete, provides structural support and can store up to 200,000 cubic meters or more.

Our pre-insulated pipe support portfolio is the most complete in terms of the types of insulation we work with and the industries we serve. We design and manufacture supports with:

  1. Permali (Cold Shoe) – Temperature range: Ambient to -300°F – Compressive strength: 22,000 PSI – Tensile strength: 28,000 PSI **
  2. Micarta (Cold Shoe) – Temperature range: Ambient to -300°F – Compressive strength: 39,000 PSI – Tensile strength: 12,000 PSI **
  3. Polyurethane (Cold Shoe) – Temperature range: Ambient to -300°F – Compressive strength: 200 PSI to 911 PSI (dependent on density) – Tensile strength: 12,000 PSI
  4. Foam Glass (Cold or Hot Shoe)** – Temperature range: -450°F to 1,000°F – Compressive strength: 100 PSI – Tensile strength: 50 PSI
  5. Marinite (Hot Shoe) – Temperature range: Ambient to 1,200°F – Compressive strength: 2,000 PSI – Tensile strength: 500 PSI **F. Calcium Silicate (Hot Shoe)** – Temperature range: Ambient to 1,200°F – Compressive strength: 160 PSI – Tensile strength: 50 PSI

The supports can be manufactured with carbon steel or stainless or the material the project may require. The thrush plates can be hastelloy, inconel, etc depending on the pipe material. Working with different metallurgies is a part of standard manufacturing protocols.

These supports are deployed in semiconductor, petrochemical, nuclear, blue hydrogen, blue ammonia, solar, LNG, pharma, data centers, automotive, mines, pulp/paper, building materials, food processing and EV battery plants.

54" Dia. Pre-Insulated Pipe Shoes Custom Designed for a Pipeline in Texas

May 14, 2024

54&Quot; Dia. Pre-Insulated Pipe Shoes Custom Designed For A Pipeline In Texas

Pipe Shields/PT&P designed and manufactured pre-insulated pipe shoes for a 54″ diameter pipeline in a propane dehydrogenation unit within a chemical processing plant in Texas. The hot shoes are custom-designed with a wide base along with slide plates to accommodate lateral movement and axial movements of +/- 4 1/2″. We designed the hot shoes to include additional bolting along with bolting torque recommendations in order to help prevent slippage of the pipe inside the pipe shoe. We designed the supports to accommodate vertical loads up to 22,200 lb. and temperatures up to 1800°F. The outer part of the shoe was manufactured of hot-dipped galvanized carbon steel while the inner insulation material is 4″ thick high-density calcium silicate insulation.

Here’s a breakdown of their key purposes:

  1. Load Bearing and Movement: Insulated pipe supports are designed to carry the weight of the pipe while also accommodating necessary movement. This is important to prevent stress on the piping system and ensure its longevity.
  2. Insulation: In areas where regular pipe insulation cannot be installed, such as at support points, high density insulated pipe supports can both support the vertical load while providing a layer of insulation. This helps to maintain the temperature of the fluid flowing through the pipes and minimizes heat loss.
  3. Cost Efficiency: By reducing heat loss and minimizing the need for additional insulation materials, insulated pipe supports can help minimize the overall cost of field installation. Additionally, their pre-assembled nature saves installation time, further contributing to cost efficiency.
  4. Non-Welded Design: Unlike traditional supports that may require welding to attach to the pipe, insulated pipe supports are not welded. This simplifies installation and reduces the risk of damage to the pipe or insulation during the installation process.
  5. Shipment as Fully Assembled Units: Insulated pipe supports are typically shipped as fully assembled units, except for certain types like riser supports and anchor supports, which may require some welding during installation. This pre-assembly reduces the need for on-site assembly and ensures consistency in quality across installations.

Overall, insulated pipe supports offer a comprehensive solution for maintaining thermal efficiency, structural integrity, and cost-effectiveness in piping systems.

Our products are ubiquitous, serving diverse industries including hospitals, airports, semiconductor plants, automotive plants, EV battery plants, data centers, pharmaceutical plants, food processing, petrochemical plants, and power and renewable energy plants sometimes used in cold service lines and some dual temp lines between TCUs (temperature control units) and reactor jackets. Engineers often specify Pipe Shields and PT&P products as the foundation for designing various piping systems.

Last year we built over 50,000 units of this kind of support in our Houston-based manufacturing facility. We were the first in the industry to employ the use of high-speed manufacturing automation to facilitate the cutting of the high-density calcium silicate to meet tight deliveries required for the projects. The advent of computer-controlled cutting equipment has improved how we do things at PT&P. Integrating these advanced technologies has led to significant improvements in manufacturing processes, enabling unparalleled accuracy in cutting high-density insulation. Computer-controlled cutting equipment allows for intricate and complex designs that were once challenging or impossible to achieve manually. Automating cutting processes has not only reduced human error but also enhanced productivity by accelerating production speeds. Moreover, these systems provide a high level of repeatability, ensuring consistent quality across multiple iterations. Another benefit was that we were able to reduce the material waste generated by human cutting by roughly 10-15%, which allowed us to remain price-competitive on a global scale.

Cryogenic Pipe Saddles Made for LNG Project

For this job, our client was a new entrant into the LNG engineering and design market space, and this was one of their capstone projects internally and for the marketplace.  Given PTP’s long history and experience concerning LNG pipe supports, we served as strategic partners in the engagement.  We identified that the client was using a pre-existing standard that underestimated the amount of Micarta® insulation thickness needed to provide adequate insulation for the facility.

PT&P engineers recognized that the insulation was not sufficient, and we tested the existing design using a test fixture we developed to demonstrate our concern.  PT&P utilized thermal scanning (infrared technology) to measure temperature at various locations around the insulated pipe support. As a result of our tests, our client corrected the concern, saving dollars, man hours, and scheduled project completion.
