4″ to 14″ Diameter Spectacle Blinds for Process Piping4″ to 14″ Diameter Spectacle Blinds for Process Piping
Project Spotlight: Precision-Fabricated Spectacle Blinds for Critical Process Safety
Sweco Fab, a subsidiary of Piping Technology & Products, recently completed the fabrication of a critical order of precision-engineered spectacle blinds:
Spectacle blinds are available in diameters ranging from 1/2″ to 24″.
For larger sizes, specifically 26″ to 112″, paddle blanks and spacers are provided as a 2-piece assembly.
We offer spectacle blinds in standard pressure classes (CL. 150, 300, 600, 900, 1500, 2500). Custom designs are also available, engineered to ASME B31.3 and based on your specific design pressure and temperature requirements.
Designed for rigorous process piping applications, these heavy-duty pipeline blinds provide a fail-safe mechanism for positive line isolation during maintenance and shutdown operations.
Spectacle blinds, also known as a figure, are essential safety devices used in piping systems where leakage past a valve could create hazardous conditions. Designed to provide positive line isolation during maintenance and shutdown operations, these heavy-duty components serve as a reliable, fail-safe barrier.
Each spectacle blind is fabricated to precise tolerances to ensure a proper seal between flanges. Whether positioned in the “open” configuration to allow flow or rotated to the “closed” position to block the line, the assembly provides clear visual confirmation of system status, enhancing operational safety and compliance.
Sweco Fab: Turnkey ASME Isolation Solutions
As a specialized subsidiary of Piping Technology & Products, Sweco Fab delivers more than just standard metal fabrication. The Sweco team provides ASME-code-compliant, turnkey isolation solutions engineered for performance, reliability, and rapid delivery.
Sweco Fab provides a range of process piping components, such as spectacle blinds, line blinds, bleed rings, orifice plates, and strainers, in various alloys. Quick turnaround on both standard and custom components distinguishes Sweco Fab from commodity suppliers—ensuring clients meet the highest standards of containment, safety, and operational efficiency.

Fronek Anchor/Darling Enterprises, Inc. and PT&P designed and fabricated hydraulic snubber and 3-bolt clamp assemblies for a refinery expansion project in Louisiana. A cycle test throughout the full stroke from zero to fully extended was performed prior to shipping.
The carbon steel sway braces for this project range in length from 88-3/8″ to 95-3/4″. The largest sway brace has an operating load of 18,000 lb., a design travel of 12″ in either compression or extension, and a spring rate of 1416 lb. per inch. The smallest sway brace has an operating load of 7000 lb., a design travel of 8″ in either compression or extension, and a spring rate of 1000 lb. per inch.
The anticipated loads and movements exceed those of the largest standard PT&P sway brace; therefore, these sway braces required a custom design and fabrication. Each of the 48 sway braces is configured with a unique combination of spring coils, housings, and internal components to accommodate the non-standard loads and movements.

Slide Plate Assemblies with Marinite® Insulation and Vibration Pads
The slide plate assemblies were fabricated from a combination of stainless steel for the low-friction sliding surface and 2-3/4″ Marinite® insulation to isolate the higher temperatures. A fabric reinforced isolator pad was placed between the slide plate and the I-beam for vibration control. The slide plates were tested for both load and heat transfer and will be utilized in a chemical plant.

Both pig launcher and receiver are fabricated from various low temperature carbon steels. They also include a GD Closure built to ASME Section VIII specifications. The operating temperature range is from -35°C to 65°C. The receiver is 33′ long and the launcher is 20′ long. Both have a 24″ diameter major barrel feeding into a 16″ diameter minor barrel. A rugged three coat paint system was applied per customer specifications. Various tests were performed, from hydrostatic and dye-penetrant to full radiography and ultrasound.

F-Type Variable Springs with Fully Adjustable Travel Stops
Piping Technology & Products, Inc. manufactured a variety of F-type variable springs with loads ranging from 526 lb. to 33723 lb. These variable springs are fabricated from a combination of carbon steel and A193-B7 CroMoly steel with A304 stainless steel slide plates. The variable springs are modified to include fully adjustable travel stops. The first purpose of the adjustable travel stops is to aid by distributing the load evenly during the installation process. The second purpose is to allow spring adjustment to any load within the operating range.
