PT&P Partners with University of Houston’s College of Technology

July 25, 2013

July 25, 2013, Houston, TX – In an effort to expand our community presence and help students expand their education and interests, Piping Technology & Products is excited to announce our new partnership with the University of Houston’s College of Technology. As the goal of the UH College of Technology is to provide the highest quality education in fields such as mechanical engineering, construction management, and computer engineering, so is Piping Technology’s goal to help educate people interested in these fields as a public service to the community. As online courses become the norm for many colleges these days, PT&P realized this would be the perfect way to combine our thirty five years of manufacturing experience  with the UH College of Technology’s established reputation.

This new online course is titled “Piping Design & Analysis Influence on Pipe Support Selection and Design”. The course covers the following topics: piping design and how it effects the overall configuration on preliminary piping design, initial layout, the total system, introduction to pipe stress analysis, detailed piping design, and how all of this influences pipe support and pipe hanger design. This is a self-paced course consisting of eight sections. The student will have four weeks to complete the eight sessions, which must be taken in sequential order.
This is an online course only, with no classroom meetings required.

This course is approved for 8 PDH hours for Texas Professional Engineers.

48" Dia. High Pressure Knock-out Drum Vessel

48" Dia. High Pressure Knock-out Drum Vessel

Sweco Fab, designed and fabricated a high pressure knock-out drum for a refining company in El Paso, Texas. The pressure vessel was designed according to ASME Section VIII Div. 1 codes with an overall height of 351″ and inside drum diameter of 48″. Its main application is to separate the vapor and liquid in the refining process. It contains a fire proofing skirt and a stainless steel demister pad that aids the separation process. The shell is fabricated from 3/8″ thick SA516 Grade 70 carbon steel, and the forge fittings are fabricated from SA105 carbon steel. The knock out drum has an operation temperature of 450°F at 125 psig, and underwent radiography, dye penetrant and hydro-tests before it was shipped.

Custom Hold-Down Pipe Clamps Designed for a Natural Gas Facility

PT&P designed custom hold-down pipe clamps for pipe sizes ranging in diameters from 6″ to 14″ at a natural gas facility. The HD-3 is an arrestor type hold down used when there is very low thermal movement and these clamps are similar to them but differ due to their adjustable bases. These clamps are fabricated from galvanized carbon steel and include a neoprene lining to absorb vibration.

Custom "Mini" Big Ton Spring Supports Designed for a Centrifugal Fan in an Chemical Refinery

PT&P custom designed “mini” big ton spring supports to support a large centrifugal fan at a chemical refinery in Texas. They are designed to support a total weight of 33,000 lb. within a maximum space envelope of 4″ wide x 16″ long x 8″ tall. As a result, these mini big-tons were fabricated using coils which could be placed in parallel within their respective frames. Four of the unites were comprised of four inner coils nested inside four outer coils to produce an operating load of 4,478 lb. and an overall spring rate of 2,740 lb./in. The smaller load capacity units were configured of four individual coils in parallel with an operating load of 3,735 lb. and a spring rate of 2,300 lb./in. The frame, load flange and all internal components were fabricated from carbon steel. The spring coils were fabricated from ASTM A-5160 spring steel. All supports were tested through their total working range to confirm load capacity and functionality.
